What is Myofascial Release?

What is Myofascial Release
Myofascial release is a hands-on, skin-on-skin, full body treatment that emphasizes gentle sustained pressure (as if making hand prints in clay or putty) in to the fascial system. This pressure is held for several minutes until the fascia is felt to elongate under the skilled hands of the treating therapist. The John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release Approach® emphasizes this time element and is what separates this type of myofascial release from traditional therapies such as soft tissue mobilization or massage. Myofascial Release is safe, effective and affordable healthcare.

The fascial system is a three dimensional web of connective tissue (much like a spider web) that continues from head to toe, uninterrupted, and surrounds every muscle, organ, blood vessel, nerve, and cell in the body. When we sustain an injury that results in a fascial restriction, we may experience pain, restricted mobility, and loss of function. This pain may occur at the site of injury and/or at a distant site that is often disregarded and not associated with the injury especially months and years following the initial injury.

Why get Myofascial Release?
Every living body has sustained some form of injury whether it be from subtle micro-trauma due to our every day lifestyles or the more obvious macro-trauma such as falls, sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, war trauma, etc. Our modern high tech society perpetuates postural and repetitive stress/strain. Even healed post-surgical scarring or tissue disruption due to invasive diagnostic procedures can wreak havoc on the fascial system.

Myofascial release is an effective treatment choice for a wide array of symptoms and diagnoses and can also be utilized as a healthy adjunct to any wellness and fitness regime. Furthermore, myofascial restrictions do not show up on any standard diagnostic tests such as x-rays, MRI's, and CT scans. All the more reasons to have your fascial system assessed and treated by a skilled myofascial release practitioner.
